전3:9-15

사람이 애쓴다고 해서, 이런 일에 무엇을 더 보탤 수 있겠는가? 이제 보니, 이 모든 것은, 하나님이 사람에게 수고하라고 지우신 짐이다. 하나님은 모든 것이 제때에 알맞게 일어나도록 만드셨다. 더욱이, 하나님은 사람들에게 과거와 미래를 생각하는 감각을 주셨다. 그러나 사람은, 하나님이 하신 일을 처음부터 끝까지 다 깨닫지는 못하게 하셨다. 이제 나는 깨닫는다. 기쁘게 사는 것, 살면서 좋은 일을 하는 것, 사람에게 이보다 더 좋은 것이 무엇이랴! 사람이 먹을 수 있고, 마실 수 있고, 하는 일에 만족을 누릴 수 있다면, 이것이야말로 하나님이 주신 은총이다. 이제 나는 알았다. 하나님이 하시는 모든 일은 언제나 한결같다. 거기에다가는 보탤 수도 없고 뺄 수도 없다. 하나님이 이렇게 하시니 사람은 그를 두려워할 수밖에 없다. 지금 있는 것 이미 있던 것이고, 앞으로 있을 것도 이미 있는 것이다. 하나님은 하신 일을 되풀이하신다.

What gain has the worker from his toil? I have seen the business that God has given to the sons of men to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time; also he has put eternity into man's mind, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; also that it is God's gift to man that every one should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil. I know that whatever God does endures for ever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has made it so, in order that men should fear before him. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.
