막1:4-11

세례자 요한이 광야에 나타나서, 죄를 용서받게 하는 회개의 세례를 선포하였다. 그래서 온 유대 지방 사람들과 온 예루살렘 주민들이 그에게로 나아가서, 자기들의 죄를 고백하며, 요단강에서 그에게 세례를 받았다. 요한은 낙타 털옷을 입고, 허리에 가죽 띠를 띠고, 메뚜기와 들 꿀을 먹고 살았다. 그는 이렇게 선포하였다. "나보다 더 능력이 있는 이가 내 뒤에 오십니다. 나는 몸을 굽혀서 그의 신발 끈을 풀 자격조차 없습니다. 나는 여러분에게 물로 세례를 주었지만, 그는 여러분에게 성령으로 세례를 주실 것입니다." 그 무렵에 예수께서 갈릴리 나사렛으로부터 오셔서, 요단강에서 요한에게 세례를 받으셨다. 예수께서 물 속에서 막 올라오시는데, 하늘이 갈라지고, 성령이 비둘기같이 자기에게 내려오는 것을 보셨다. 그리고 하늘로부터 소리가 났다. "너는 내 사랑하는 아들이다. 내가 너를 좋아한다.“

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."

눅3:7-14

요한은 자기에게 세례를 받으러 나오는 무리에게 말하였다. "독사의 자식들아, 누가 너희에게 닥쳐올 진노를 피하라고 일러주더냐? 회개에 알맞는 열매를 맺어라. 너희는 속으로 '아브라함은 우리의 조상이다' 하고 말하지 말아라. 내가 너희에게 말한다. 하나님께서는 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자손을 만드실 수 있다. 도끼를 이미 나무 뿌리에 갖다 놓으셨다. 그러므로 좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 다 찍어서 불 속에 던지신다." 무리가 요한에게 물었다. "그러면 우리는 무엇을 해야 합니까?" 요한이 그들에게 대답하였다. "속옷을 두 벌 가진 사람은 없는 사람에게 나누어 주고, 먹을 것을 가진 사람도 그렇게 하여라." 세리들도 세례를 받으러 와서, 그에게 물었다. "선생님, 우리는 무엇을 해야 하겠습니까?" 요한은 그들에게 대답하였다. "너희에게 정해 준 것보다 더 받지 말아라." 또 군인들도 그에게 물었다. "그러면 우리들은 무엇을 해야 하겠습니까?" 요한이 그들에게 대답하였다. "아무에게도 협박하여 억지로 빼앗거나, 거짓 고소를 하여 빼앗거나, 속여서 빼앗지 말고, 너희의 봉급으로 만족하게 여겨라.“

He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall we do?" And he answered them, "He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise." Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Collect no more than is appointed you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages."
