믿음—다시읽기(마14:22-33)

예수께서 곧 제자들을 재촉하여 배를 태워 건너편으로 먼저 가게 하시고 그 동안에 군중을 돌려보내셨다. 군중을 보내신 뒤에 조용히 기도하시려고 산으로 올라가셔서 날이 이미 저물었는데도 거기에 혼자 계셨다. 그 동안에 배는 육지에서 멀리 떨어져 있었는데 역풍을 만나 풍랑에 시달리고 있었다. 새벽 네 시쯤 되어 예수께서 물 위를 걸어서 제자들에게 오셨다. 예수께서 물 위를 걸어오시는 것을 본 제자들은 겁에 질려 엉겁결에 "유령이다!" 하며 소리를 질렀다. 예수께서 제자들을 향하여 "나다, 안심하여라. 겁낼 것 없다." 하고 말씀하셨다. 베드로가 예수께 "주님이십니까? 그러시다면 저더러 물 위로 걸어오라고 하십시오." 하고 소리쳤다. 예수께서"오너라." 하시자 베드로는 배에서 내려 물 위를 밟고 그에게로 걸어갔다. 그러다가 거센 바람을 보자 그만 무서운 생각이 들어 물에 빠져들게 되었다. 그는 "주님, 살려주십시오!" 하고 비명을 질렀다. 예수께서 곧 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡으시며 "왜 의심을 품었느냐? 그렇게도 믿음이 약하냐?" 하고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 함께 배에 오르시자 바람이 그쳤다. 배 안에 있던 사람들이 그 앞에 엎드려 절하며 "주님은 참으로 하느님의 아들이십니다." 하고 말하였다.

Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water."

He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
