[5] So he came to a city of Samar'ia, called Sy'char, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. [6] Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. [7] There came a woman of Samar'ia to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." [8] For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. [9] The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samar'ia?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. [10] Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." [11] The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? [12] Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" [13] Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, [14] but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

예수께서 사마리아 지방의 시카르라는 동네에 이르셨다. 이 동네는 옛날에 야곱이 아들 요셉에게 준 땅에서 가까운 곳인데 거기에는 야곱의 우물이 있었다. 먼 길에 지치신 예수께서는 그 우물가에 가 앉으셨다. 때는 이미 정오에 가까웠다. 마침 그 때에 한 사마리아 여자가 물을 길으러 나왔다. 예수께서 그를 보시고 물을 좀 달라고 청하셨다. 제자들은 먹을 것을 사러 시내에 들어가고 없었다. 사마리아 여자는 예수께 "당신은 유다인이고 저는 사마리아 여자인데 어떻게 저더러 물을 달라고 하십니까?" 하고 말하였다. 유다인들과 사마리아인들은 서로 상종하는 일이 없었던 것이다. 예수께서는 그 여자에게 "하느님께서 주시는 선물이 무엇인지, 또 너에게 물을 청하는 내가 누구인지 알았더라면 오히려 네가 나에게 청했을 것이다. 그러면 내가 너에게 샘솟는 물을 주었을 것이다." 하고 대답하시자 그 여자는 "선생님, 우물이 이렇게 깊은데다 선생님께서는 두레박도 없으시면서 어디서 그 샘솟는 물을 떠다 주시겠다는 말씀입니까? 이 우물물은 우리 조상 야곱이 마셨고 그 자손들과 가축까지도 마셨습니다. 선생님께서는 이러한 우물을 우리에게 주신 야곱보다 더 훌륭하시다는 말씀입니까?" 하고 물었다. 예수께서는 "이 우물물을 마시는 사람은 다시 목마르겠지만 내가 주는 물을 마시는 사람은 영원히 목마르지 않을 것이다. 내가 주는 물은 그 사람 속에서 샘물처럼 솟아올라 영원히 살게 할 것이다." 하셨다.
